Community Orchard Update – Eaton Lands

On Sunday 2nd February planting finally took place at the Hythe Community Orchard, Eaton Lands.

Work on this project has been ongoing for some years and it is lovely to finally see the “fruits” of all the hard work put in by Hythe Civic Society and Hythe Environmental Community Group which was fully supported by the Trustees of Eaton Lands.  Members of the public were kept informed at all stages with posters on site, on the Town Council noticeboards and website.

15 fruit trees of different apple, pear and plum varieties have now been planted by 25 volunteers.  The semi-mature trees are well spaced out to encourage people to walk around the site once it is well established.  The recent planting will be followed by low wildlife friendly hedging around two sides of the site, together with 4 Morello Cherry and Damson saplings.

Later in the year information/educational  boards will be erected, which will be designed with input from local schools.  The Bumblebee Trust will be working with the Community Orchard group to develop bee hotels etc and local schools and disadvantaged groups will also  be involved in this project.
